Snow storm

The contractors called off work today because of a snowstorm. Good, no noise from heavy equipment droning and banging. Just the wind. A welcome silence.

I went out after lunch to see what I could see and was reminded why I love being out in it. It's beautiful. Even in the cold wind and snow. The winter blanket that gives mother nature her sleep is so peaceful. I felt warm all afternoon.

I took up weaving...

It's dark at 5 o'clock so rather than plop my ars on the couch for a marathon channel surfing session, I found something to occupy a few hours spread out over a week...or so.

I found a snowshoe making kit to build my own snowshoes.
Yeah, I know what you may be thinking..."this guy has a bad case of cabin feaver."

The frames come pre-assembled and the rest was up to me.
I dumped out all the parts, read through the instructions a couple times and got started.
First I sanded down the frames to a nice smooth finish.

Then got started with weaving the toe section first. My first try was a flop. I was half way through the weave and the pattern looked like a pile of spaghetti noodles. So I un-wove (is that a word?) and started over...3 times. Finally got it.

Then wove the tail sections. Only had to un-weave and re-start once.

Then came the center sections. Oh yeah, 3 un-weaves and re-starts later, I finally got it.

4 coats of varnish later and bindings attached.
Now I'm wishing for more snow.
Go away El Nino, I want a big dump.

Skiing with Dog

I finally got a Sunday off to ski in daylight. Most of my outings recently have been after work, in the dark, with a head lamp and the occasional glowing eyes of deer off in the woods.

Self timer shots rarely turn out very good. Fogged lens.

Minus 30 degrees

That's right. It was -30 degrees F this morning. Add a little wind and we get a windchill of -59 F.
The high temperature today will be -10 F
Hey, at least I've got that snow I wished for.

Dawning of a very cold day.
