Quick race report. Sprint Du last weekend. "C" race pace. 41 degrees and windy.
Run 1: 25:18 at 8:26 pace. Bike: 51:43 at 19.7 mph. Run 2: 23:31 at 8:53 pace. 1:41.48.
2006: 50 degrees, light breeze.
Run 1: 24:45 at 8:15 pace. Bike: 40:37 at 20.6 mph. Run 2: 23:38 at 8:55 pace. 1:39.13.
What was different? Me I guess. 1. 2007, total ironman pacing and stayed in HR zones, mostly. 2. 2006 sprint training and blew up on second run. 3. 2007, lots of wind on the bike. 4. 2007, tired as heck from all the IM training. My running still seems slow but I could have done 5 more laps at that pace. Legs felt good. Satisfied that my IM training is working out but...
What the heck has happend to me? I can't seem to get my mind around 2.5 min slower time. I'm in IRONMAN SHAPE for krysake! Oh, you mean there's a difference between sprints and ironman? I'm an IM newbie and trying to learn something here but man I'm perplexed. I'm all blithering, tired, hungry, tired, emotional, tired. Time for a nap before my 2 hour ride at "race pace", whatever the heck that is.

Humph, yah I'm a wee bit grouchy today. I now have a bit of an idea how this whole IM triathlete lifestyle could really put a strain on a relationship. In the past 5 months, I've become so selfish about "my" time, "my" training, "my" schedule, "my" food, "my" sleep, it's all about "me" and to heck with anything else that doesn't help "me" stay on track and reach "my" goal. I , me, my. Listen to me, a part of me has become a selfish little brat who gets anything he wants...except faster. I sure hope all this pays off or I'll really be pissed at myself for waisting so much time and neglecting my friends and family. Maybe I'll feel better in 12 days...TAPER TIME! Is that when I change from a grouchy little worm into a beautiful butterfly?

Don't be so hard on yourself. Like you said, you're in ironman shape. Translation: sprint is the distance where even smoking couch-potatoes think "I could do that", but ironman is the event where even the very fit think, "I could never do that". And, psh, we all know that you could have gone faster, but unlike some of those couch potatoes rolling around the course as fast as their tuber-legs would take them, you were just out there training (for an IRONMAN!). You could have beat them if you wanted to. I'm sure you were the biggest stud out there, even if you weren't the first across the line. Sheesh, give yourself a break!
Hang in there...you sound like you have a case of super tiredness almost at the peak of training before tapering. Try to get more sleep...i'm sure that would help ya.
And so you compared your times to last year...how did your HR fare? Lower HR? i'm sure for equal time...which would have meant faster time if you had pushed it super hard.
Keep on keeping on...you'll get there.
