But the doctor said this...

And this...

My post-op exam and consult went...
Good: Healing up well. No more clicking and grinding in my knee. No pain. Normal swelling and fluid build-up. Plan on 2-3 months rehab. Swim, aqua-running, walk, stationary bike, and cross country ski (late season). Maybe strength training in February.
Bad: No long distance running, ever. No more Ironman's, ever. No running down hill, ever. Feeling kinda bummed out right now.
Ugly: I have several pairs of running shoes that need a home. Mens, Size 8.5 neutral. Let me know if you want them or they'll go to a charity.
The upshot is that this latest knee fix should last me 20 years if I don't run. 10 years or less if I do run. At this moment, I plan to do everything but run and get strong and fast on the bike.
Glory Days: There was a summer back in the mid-90's that I managed to stay in the top 10 of my age group throughout a 13-race mountain bike series. It was great fun and I was the rookie on the team. I'm gonna try to get that mojo back.
Right now, I've got to ice and elevate.
Two weeks after surgery. Still swollen.

Glad to hear the healing is going well. Wish I could wear your shoes :)
I'm crushed for you! This is such a bummer. And yet I know that Ironman spirit of embracing life will help you find a different way to embrace life. There's a full aquathon in August –– Ironman sans marathon –- run by Vineman. The perk? It's run the same day as Barb's - a 70.3 for women. So you'll enjoy the view!
sorry about the docs putting the kibosh on the running....
you have tons of competitive fire and so i know you will funnel that into racing in the water...and or the bike...with an occasional running event thrown in (on flat terrain of course)
i'm sorry to hear about the running prognosis but at least you can bend it now and there is no pain. I'm sure you will find some more fun to get yourself into.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery and total dominance of all cycling and swimming events!
That just plain stinks! But look on the bright side. Less money spent on running shoes.
(long pause)
OK, I know it's little consolation. However, something tells me you will recover and have gained much knowledge in the end.
Stay tuned...
Wow, hang in there! That "no long running" is tough news, but it could have been worse!!
Happy Hoildays!!
I will vouch for Benson that his knees are usually much, much sexier than that.
Dude - do you double-dog-dare me to post that IM Switz pic of you in transition before the swim??? I know you know which one!... Superman!
te-he-he
;-)
p.s. - can I please, please???
Keep icing and rehabing, your knee will get better soon!! Sorry about the news, but you could go back to kicking serious butt on the bike again! You will get there!!
Hope the knee continues to heal well. So sorry about the running news.
Sorry bout the news man. You've done more than 99% of the people that I know so be proud of what you have done.
:( I see serious biking success in your future. But still, I'm bummed for you. Hope you are continuing to heal and feel better. Merry Christmas!
I'm sorry to hear your update but hope you have a great Christmas.
Sometimes are bodies just disagree with what we want to do. I love your outlook.... I find myself looking for new challenges and ways to keep both mind and body happy - as frustrating as it may be, it is what it is, right?
Happy Holidays!
Yikes, nooooo! Looks like I've missed some major developments in my blogger hibernation. I'm sorry you can't ever run down hill, or long distances ever again. But I'm sure, deep down inside, isn't there a part that's just the tiniest bit relieved? I know you may not admit to it, but I bet this'll be the start of another new and interesting phase in your life.
In the meantime, rest up and feel better. Merry Christmas!
Benson...Trevor told me about you Ironman future as per doctor's orders. Well I guess the good news is that you have a huge Ironman past and many memories. You can always be proud of that.
